2001 325ci
138,000 miles
Standard transmission
Completely stock, dealer maintained.
Five days ago the idle started being rough. Two days ago must pump the gas peddle or motor will turn off.
Unplugged the mass airflow sensor and it runs like new; perfect acceleration; very smooth idle.
Removed the air filter box and sensor. Air filter and box are very clean. No obvious damage to the sensor or appearance of being “dirty.”
Sprayed the entire sensor with the cleaner made specifically for cleaning the mass airflow sensor. Let dry completely for one hour and reinstalled. Re-connected the entire system and plugged in the sensor cable.
No change in the problem.
Un plug the sensor cable and it runs like new.
I have Checked all the hoses for damage and can find none. There are no fluid leaks on the motor or under the car.
I believe that I need a new mass airflow sensor. The OEM BMW is around $450.
Could the problem be this simple?
Do you trust a brand other than OEM BMW?
Thank you for the help. I am not a mechanic !!

Replacement of MAF sensor is not the first step you should be performing.
- Perform a diagnostic scan.
- Obtain and record codes displayed.
- Understand meaning of codes, or post back here for explanations.
