    BMW ista D without icom.

    Hy guys!

I just would like to ask you, can I use ista D to diag my car (e36 from '97) via ADS cable? I only have got: round socket (20pin) obd 2 to usb cable (inpa cable with switch) Toshiba satellite l755 with win7 32bit.

Anybody can give me an idea "how to"?

ADS or OBD? Being a 97 & OBD2, you should be able to get a connection with to 20 pin underhood connector. (ADS, iirc, works with OBD1 vehicles.)

That being said, I'm not sure if ISTA-D will operate with just a USB-OBD interface. I seem to remember reading that you can configure it to work. Search some of online installation threads.

Why not just use INPA / Easy-DIS?

    Thanks a lot!

'Cause I've got a strange engine it has got m52b20 block with m50 head, and I think it is a little issue, 'Cause I could not make connection with the modules, except DME. so whatever I choose another module in inpa such as abs or instrument cluster, I get ifh-0006 error. I tried it with DIS, but I got the same results. So... I can't access my abs module, and it is important, because my abs and asc lights are on in my dash.

You mentioned, maybe it is possible to get connection via inpa cable with ISTA-D, I searched on the net but I can't get any solution... can you give me a tip or a trick with that?

The no connection except DME rings a bell. Sounds like what I've seen on my '97 E39 when trying get to connect thru the OBD port in the cabin. Connection to all modules requires use of the 20 pin underhood connector, if equipped. I typically use a 20 -> 16 (OBD) adapter, with a USB K+Dcan OBD cable. I've read that some USB cables require bridging pins 7 & 8, some do not. (Far too many differences in cables / adapters out there!)

I'll see if I can dig up the ISTA info at work tomorrow.

I only have got the round socket under my hood, I have not got the obd2 connector in my dash, however my car is from '97... but she is EUR model.

Here's one of the links that came up when I searched. http://blog.obdii365.com/2015/07/13/...-kd-can-cable/ See if that helps.

A thought came to mind (frightening, I know!) The Euro Spec E36's are not OBD2 compliant. (Not until 2001, I think.) That leads me to believe that you will require an ADS interface to communicate. I got very similar results (DME only, and missing items that should have been there) when scanning a friends '94 E38. If it is indeed ADS (and I'd need someone with Euro experience to confirm), you'll need a serial to ADS cable as well as a true serial port on your laptop. (Seems that the USB -> Serial converters will not work with ADS & EDIABAS.) You'll also need to reconfigure EDIABAS for ADS.

That all being said, I hope this helps.

Edit - I did some more searching. I did not find anything that stated ISTA could be configured for ADS. I did find one post that stated that it could not. http://blog.obdexpress.co.uk/2017/06...-vs-rheingold/ If infact your E36 is an ADS vehicle, I can't say for sure it will work. If yu decide to try, please let us know how it goes!
