    Right carb_Right cam ?

Hello, i am looking for some infos to choose the right parts for my engine setup. Engine is a 318i coming from an E30. Its a pre catalytic version with 9.5 compression. Plan is to stay with the single carb to keep an original look. Here its starts to get a bit difficult for me. Carb of choice would be a weber register 32/36 or a 38/38 double downdraft. As i understand the 38/38 is the one for more performance than the 32/36. A Schrick Camshaft would be the next step: but schrick say for a single carb engine the 284 is the max to go with. As i remember some of you are running a 292 cam with a single carb and it seems that it works? By the way exhaust system will be a free flow 2.25" martelius one. Here in germany the single carb versions are not so often done so i hope to get some informations by this way. Greets andreas

just to clarify, are you talking about a M10? the E30 came with three different 1.8l engines, a M10, M40 and M42.

32/36 not sure what max would be but I have heard of a schrick 292. Not sure how it ran in person but apparently it's been done. The 38/38 I've heard and seen up to a 304 schrick. Mostly race car 2002's that move on to 45mm dcoe's. Eventually with a single down draft carb you'll have too much reversion ie spitting more fuel backwards through the carb. I went with Steve's suggestion from TEP on the 294 they offer for this reason.

Eh I went on the 2002faq board and see you've a response from Jeff already. Good to go then Was going to say should post there too.

Yes, i posted it to the 2002 forum too and now there are already two opinions. Jeff said going with the 38/38 in combination with a 292 cam will not lead to a overcarbed / cammed engine situation. Others told me to use with my 1.8 the mild 32/36 and 284 combination because of the smaller displacement. Will wait what happens further, but many thanks to you

32/36 is always more streetable vs the 38. That being said some like against the grain. I drove my 38 on the street with 288 TEP cam for years. It's all how you set it up. If keeping the 1.8 and stock bottom end I always recommend trying to increase compression. My head is milled very far to make the 1.8 work better with a large cam. It's should be thought of as a system. If just slap a huge cam in a standard 1.8 you'll leave power on the table. It will work but not as well as the cam is designed for.
