Yea, it's the first time I've wished I had an S52.
But I love my S50, sounds and feels good all wound up and sht.
s52?....no biggie..........I never had issues running w/ s52's on the track....ever.....

I got a buddy whos got an s52 w/ every bolt on and all done by Turner..........it is really amazing for what it is.....
Yea, I drove an S52 with ~250 at the wheels. Good torque, great top end. Fun fun fun.
I HAVE been tempted.
My machine shop isn't making me feel good.
Me: Checking in on the status of the head.
Them: I've not got to it yet.
Me: When might that happen.
Them: I hoping end of this week.
I hate that word when I'm dependant on someone else.

But today even an S52 is 20 years old. For motor that is tracked, a 20 year old valvetrain whether S50 or S52 is a lot riskier than a refreshed one. And given the labor and down time and parts cost and potential piston or head damage from failure, the risk is worth reducing if you can afford to address it now.

oh...i did have shop test the sprgs.....and I only replaced 2.....but Im super careful at not over revving or even wringing engine to nth degree......

Water temp. It does have a audible and visual alarm, but I still need to move it into better view. I tend to ignore audible alarms during any adrenaline rush. lol
Got the head today! Everything tested good. 4 thousandths removed.
Watching youtube vids on cam and vanos install. Looks simple enough. However, looking at pictures I took of my setup before dissasembly, tell me the vanos cams weren't one tooth out of time??

I'd have to read up again to really know what i'm talking about, but i recall that space being there in the cam slot between the hole and the end of the slot. It sort of falls into place that way. I'm really struggling to remember more. This post is fairly worthless.
I don’t think your cams were 1 tooth off. Looks right to me. You will see when you reinstall. Fiddle until you are sure it can’t be better. Then you will understand.
Well...by the book....
Primary timing worked out to be as before dissasembly (unless primary chain moved on the crankshaft sprocket).
But, Vanos/secondary moved one tooth. I'm concerned.
Marks were the original timing. Pics below show obviously moved 1 tooth to insure full CW and CCW movement of secondary sprockets.

Keep trying until you are sure it is not possible to get it better. I use the DrVanos/Beisan stage 2 instructions that have you start by lining the exhaust arrow up with the top ledge of the head. Also make sure you are at TDC. Uses mirror to factor in the engine slant. And don’t turn the engine back wards to reach tdc. Only forwards.
Thanks, good points. I'll retime and pay attention to detail. My flywheel pin has a little slack in it.
Dare I ask, would you install as before and ignore what's going on?
Informational Question. I'm confused as to why it matters which tooth/teeth are used on the exhaust sprocket. I mean, if cams and engine are at TDC, and slack is removed from primary chain, the slots either show 4 mounting holes, or they don't. Why is it important to have the holes 'centered' in the slots rather than off to one side? Again, this is on the primary/exhaust sprocket that doesn't move once tightend down.
Everything's back together. But crap, I have a pretty bad exhaust header leak. Crap.
I timed the Vanos by the book, which is 1 tooth different than prior to dissasembly. Short run up to 3500 rpm seemed fine. But only at 1/2 throttle.
