Hey guys been looking around for a few months for an m3 in the Bay Area and found a 300000 mile M3 with a Dinan supercharger strapped on. The guy said he rebuilt vanos and the entire top end and transmission as well as 300k mile maintenance. The problem I have with this is he's asking 11 grand for it. Would you guys take a look at this for me and tell me whether you would pay his asking price or not. Thanks, Tui.

lol 11K and the cruise control, ABS, and AC don't work. Classic craigslist. Another guy looking to get way too much money for a car he dumped money into and hardly drove. Really he should sell the SC separately.

I did and would do it all over again. A very well maintained/cared for one mostly stock clean stock interior. Paid only $3k for it though.
Sure. There's nothing wrong with mileage if the car has been maintained and wear items replaced. Unless you're looking at a car under 100K miles, at this point age is probably a much bigger factor than mileage.
However, that particular car is someone's forced induction project, with a bunch of stuff broken. I wouldn't touch that unless it was about half the price.
If you happen to see a 300K mile M3 with no significant issues, proper maintenance, no leaks, and a price under $8-9K or so, I'd say that's a good deal for a car to drive and enjoy.

Yeah I guess the search is still on...I found this one and it’s looks nice. 140k engine miles and 180k on the chassis, it looks like it has some modest upgrades to it. The only problem I have is the 3rd gear grinds in cold weather and that might be an issue since where I live (millbrae) it can get cold at times. He’s asking 11k, but what do you guys think it’s worth.

I have 356K miles on mine. It was stock when I bought it and everything was intact but was neglected.
Several months later and I have 15K in this car and have yet to address the interior or the body work/paint, but she runs well. Admittedly my build is more DE oriented so I'm spending with that goal in mind.
The key here is mine was neglected. If I bought one that wasn't I would be spending less, about 6K less to be more precise as I needed professional help to sort a lot of the little things out and while there I let them handle the majority of the mechanical work.

I have 226k on mine. Interior and mechanically current / good shape, exterior has a couple door dings I should address but haven't. A paintless dent guy would probably charge between $200-300 to fix them, so not too bad. The car has always been waxed, so no oxidation at all anywhere.
While I take umbrage with my insurance company appraising the car under $5k, I think a fair value is closer to ten. Based on what it would take to get a 90k mile car up to current maintenance - and based on what that would cost just to buy even without maintenance - I think $10k is a good number for a well-maintained but high-millage car. And incidentally, $10k is what I have into my car just in parts since I bought it 8 years ago.
Maybe these have appreciated far more than I realize, but I would never pay what these guys are asking for a car with more than 100k miles AND multiple known issues.
I'd pay $15k for a well-maintained 100k mile car, $12k for 150k miles, and $9-10k for 200k miles. I've kept track of what I've spent updating my car, so I'd subtract that (and some amount of PITA fee) for anything not current.
The second car you've found is somewhere in that $10-11k ballpark based on what I've said, minus around $500-1000 for the things it needs fixed (a new door handle, fixing the e-brake, and a new tranny). And this pre-supposes you're looking for a race car and the cage and overfenders are a positive (and decently done. And the standard for "decently" is much lower than if this was a street car).
-Josh: 1998 S54 E36 M3/4/6 with most of the easy stuff and most of the hard stuff. At least twice. 271k miles. 1994 E32 740il with nothing but some MPars. 93k miles.
Looks pretty good for 300k miles.
