Both side view mirrors on my 2009 X5 have darkened, is this an electrical problem or are the shot. My dealer want $1000 to replace them. Anybody have any experience with this
Please clarify which model year you are referring to because what you have listed would be two different generations of BMW X5s. Under "MY CARS" at the top right of page it says you have a 2006 X5 (which would be an e53)...but the body of your post says you have a 2009 X5...which would be an e70.
Have you done (or had done) any work on the doors? Asking because the side mirrors get commands to darken/lighten from the interior rear view mirror (at least on the e53 X5). And if you've had work done on the doors...perhaps the wiring got pinched/disconnected/etc.
Or do you have anything wrapped around the interior rear view mirror? There are sensors on the front AND back...and if they get covered/blocked...it could affect the dimming properties of the mirrors.

Thanks Q, sorry about that, had to update my profile, it is a 2009.
Since both mirrors did it at the same time it probably is that sensor, will check it.
