Hi Everyone, I'm pretty new to the forums and am having issues with my E36 M3,
So, about a month ago I had pushed the car further than I had before and reached about 140 (closed course ofcourse) as I was slowing down tho the car stalled out on me on the highway. It wasn't much of a problem I chucked it into neutral and restarted but it was not happy, because of school I had to let it sit for about a month thh till now to really dig into it.
It, had a P0301 code initially, so I just decided to swap the coil pack from cylinder 1 to cylinder 2
Now I have a,
P0302
P0301
P0300
So both cylinder 1 and 2 are missfireing now,
I had replaced all of the spark plugs about 2500 miles ago when I first got the car. The car sounds like a camed V8 on startup and stalls out after less than 30 seconds sometimes it lasts nore more, pretty much just enough time to read the codes.
Anyone have any thoughts it would be much appreciated.
Best,

So you swapped your ignition coil from cyl 1 to cyl 2 and now you have a misfire for cyl 2. Fairly safe to say your ignition coil is the problem.

While this is true cylinder 1 still had a missfire even after swaping in the good coil, just not sure where to look next for this.

Did you actually reset the codes after swapping ignition coils? If not, the code for cyl1 will still remain even if you aren’t still misfiring cyl1

If the car is on the orignals I'd just get 6 new ignition coils and go from there.
Hmm, I'm not sure if I did clear the codes, I will do this once i get home thank you.
As for swapping all 6 coils I'm going to be swapping just the one for the time being and seeing if that fixes it given moneys tight thanks to school atm, once the summer internship comes around and the cash starts to flow again rest assured that the rest will be replaced, at this point I'm trying to get her up and running again.
Here's the coils if you do need them: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...-12131748017x6
So, Update,
I picked up a duralast coil from autozone for the time being to even see if I can get the car running,
She starts Stutters and shakes the entire car in the process before soon after stalling out
Both Cylinder 1 and 2 are throwing codes again after clearing them,

Are you sure you didn't money shift?

I'm Honestly not sure I'm praying not but who knows at this point.
From what I'm seeing it sounds better up around 1k but it just will not hold idle

If I did money shift would there be an oil or fluid leak of some sort or could the internals have just shit them selves?

No one wants that.... a compression check will reveal if there is damage. A money shift doesn't necessarily spray parts all over. Bent valves is what will be the results. Any chance you downshifted and over-revved the engine?

I know I hit redline but if I'm not mistaken I never made it into gear,
Looks like it's time to go get a compression testing kit

They don't cost much, but you should be able to borrow one from any auto parts store.
What you're describing sounds similar to what what happened to me - got misfires in adjacent cylinders (5 & 6), tried all kinds of things to diagnose, did a compression test and got no compression in either cylinder. When I took the head of, the gasket had just burned out between them.
The good news is that it's not the end of the world - your head is likely still straight, and though tedious, the job isn't overly complex.
Keep us posted.

A HG job costs money. Put the car in storage, get a bike, fix car after graduation and a job. Racing around at 140 mph probably also not helping your studies. Are your parents aware of such activities?

They know I drive in a sporting fashion I don't believe they know to what extent though. After reading the post from yesterday I figured that I would be parking her for a while because well school has to come first right now. So i'm going to have to leave y'all hanging for a while but good news is once the summer internship starts and things loosen up, this project will really get going.

Don’t forget to put some stabilizer in the fuel before parking it.
I was in autocross club while in school, it was a fun distraction from engineering studies but I never had money to do it right. Although one learns how to be resourceful!
