Front windshield is NLA, what is everyone using and how much $$?

Hey guys I have a big crack (like 14" long) on my windshield and I need to get it replaced. I looked up the BMW part # 51311977217 and it's NLA everywhere.

What is everyone using for replacement glass that isn't crap? Pilkington?

What should I expect to pay?

So a buddy who works at a dealer looked it up again and it's actually NOT NLA... Still interested to see what peoples experiences have been getting new glass though.

NSG (= Nippon Sheet Glass)/Pilkington is one of the four largest glass companies in the world alongside another Japanese company Asahi Glass, Saint-Gobain Sekurit, and Guardian Industries.
So with one of them you go no risk.

Whatever windshield is put in, ask to examine it first for distortion.

Also, and depending on your deductible, what about your insurance company?

Probably not worth filing a claim over since you'll pay for it several times over when your rates increase as a result. Unless it was the result of a collision where you have an existing claim or where someone else is on the hook for it, just eat it yourself.

Fuyao or FY. Inexpensive and decent enough for an occasional driver/ predominantly DE car.

Call a couple of body shops and ask who they use for glass. Usually there's an independent floating around who just does glass for shops but will do an occasional private vehicle.
That's the guy you want to talk to and ask about who produces good glass, inexpensive or otherwise.
    See ya later,

I got one from Pittsburgh Glass Works. PGW was at one time, part of PPG which was an oem supplier of automotive transparencies. My dad built 747 windscreens for years at the PPG plant here until he retired recently.

Ballpark, about what did it cost? Mine is heavily pitted and the weather strip along the bottom is cracking. Would like to get an idea for comparison purposes. More than a grand? Please let me know.
