advice needed please guys

i have a friends E60 and the radio keeps stopping then coming back on 5 mins later - when the radio stops the idrive controller knob also stops working - I connected my laptop and NCS expert but it wont work I was going to reprogram .flash the car - I did this on my e60 when my idrive unit was replaced and needed recoded but this can athough it reads the VIN it wont go any further - do you guys think it sounds like a faulty mask unit or controller etc ? any input welcome - thanks - wish i understood y ncs expert isnt working for this car but works for mine - thanks

Does it do this with key on, engine off as well as engine running?
