Pilot Shaft when changing clutch and pressure plate?

I've only changed out manual transmissions on GM products (and old ones at that) and when putting the clutch and pressure plate back on the flywheel we always had to have a "pilot shaft" (generally an old cutoff input shaft) to make sure the plate lined up perfectly with the "bearing" in the center of the flywheel. When I look at people changing out these all the videos seem to be when they are picking the transmission up and putting it in the car.

I assume there is some kind of tool to line this up on the BMW or does it just magically center itself?
