Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
BMW wheels are "hub centric" not "lug centric"...so the center bore of the wheel is an important spec to know. If the center bore of the wheel is NOT 74.1mm...then you'll need to know if the wheels center bore is larger or smaller than 74.1mm.
You can see the wheel hub of a BMW in the pic below...BMW wheels mount on the small circular extension on the wheel hub and that's what centers the wheel (not the lug bolts):
If the wheel's CB is larger than 74.1mm...then you'll need to fit hub centric rings (to help "fill" the circumference) or purchase wheel spacers that fixes the different hub sizes. If you don't then the wheels will probably not stay centered and you'll get vibration. Even if you do center them...if you hit a bump/hole/heaved pavement/etc...it could shift the wheel if the hit was hard enough since the wheel is sitting flat against the hub with nothing to center it (because the set-up is NOT lug-centric).
If the wheel's CB is smaller than 74.1mm...then you'll need to either bore the wheel out to the correct size...or purchase wheel spacers that again...fixes the difference.

Did the wheels come from an E39?

No, BMW are 5x120
You'd either need to use specific adapters, or get them drilled out
ET10 is probably ok, if lowered you'd risk rubbing but if OEM suspension, should be ok
BMW E39s centre bore is 74.1 as well, so the alloy wheel bore needs to be this, or larger and then you can use spigot rings
If smaller, you'd need 74.1 to 72.6 hubcentric spacers to allow the alloys to fit, longer bolts will be needed then also, or you can do a stud conversion
Either way, without work, those alloys will not fit
