I wonder if anyone has had this problem

I have a 2001 540i and the key remote does not lock or unlock the doors. I even bought a new key from BMW. If there is someone who has any ideas please share them with me. I am in Markham, Ontario, Canada

Sounds like you need to re program your remote.

    1) Insert key into the ignition and turn it to the first position, turn back off within 5 seconds.
    2) PULL THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION.
    3) Press and hold the unlock button, then push the BMW roundel (lock button) 3 times, pausing for about 2 seconds in between each press. Release the unlock button. The doorlocks should now cycle between lock and unlock. Now your key is programmed to your car.
    4) Re-insert the key into the ignition, turn forward to position 1 and back off within 5 seconds to End programming.

I tried all that and it still does not work. I went to the dealer and the service guy told me it would be too expensive to fix

Check the fuse in the trunk for the fuel door lock. I found that mine was blown and would blow after replacing it. I unplugged the fuel door lock and solved the problem (although the fuel door doesn't lock with the car now).

Edit: I believe it's fuse #53, a 7.5 amp fuse that goes bad indicating a bad fuel door actuator.
