Cooling fan (320d 100kW)

could someone, please, tell me how exactly cooling fan works? I want to know at which temperature fan starts and which direction should it spin?
Is air pulled in from outside of engine bay or is pulled out from engine bay?

Air always comes in, or is sucked in, from the front of the car into the engine bay. Otherwise it would not work while driving.

I have some problem with that. Fan does not start so I tried to connected it directly to 12V and used to switch to on/off it but it spins in direction to pull out air from engine bay even during drive.

Then you may have mixed up the + and - on your electric fan.

I thought that problem was in that but if I change + and - nothing happens. Before connection I measured voltage on pins and I think it is connected in right way.
