Where does the homelink save the codes? Could I just swap the unit from one car to the other? I’m having problems getting the new car to read the garage opener signal. Seems like a silly waste of time, but I tried syncing the new unit for about 30 minutes to no avail.

The HOMELINK unit has an IC board inside of it...the code is saved to the HOMELINK unit. Just like the GDO (garage door opener) fobs that came with the opener hanging from your garage ceiling...you can move them to any other vehicle because they are coded specifically to your GDO. The same with the HOMELINK...it has been coded to your GDO...and if the data hasn't been erased...it will continue to transmit the code it was programmed to transmit.
I wonder how volatile the HOMELINK's memory is? Will it remain programmed indefinitely if removed from electrical power? Or will it keep the memory for a limited amount of time (minutes/hours/days/weeks/months/years)?
Also, there are multiple HOMELINK units that operate on different frequencies for different ranges of time. The units installed in the early e38s had buttons that were unlit & had a red status LED when the buttons were pressed. Then around the mid 90s the GDO frequencies changed industry-wide...so the HOMELINKs had to change to keep up and the buttons became lit (illuminated) and the status LED changed to amber and/or green during the later e38 production.
Then GDO frequencies changed again around 2010/11...so if you have a new Chamberlain or Liftmaster GDO...your old UGDO (universal garage door openers aka HOMELINKs) may not work with the new GDOs...and you will have to get a "bridge" unit (repeater) that will allow your old UGDO to work with the new GDO.

Yeah, according to my 2 year old GDO, I need a repeater to work with e38. Maybe OP has similar issue?

Thanks franco, I am going to try the instructions in the second link this weekend!

Yeah, thanks guys! You’ve given me way more info than I imagined I could get. I will swap them and see what happens.

The swap was a piece of cake. It took 3 minutes and the old homelink still works after sitting for a few months with no battery attached.
