    Code P0500

    **Solved**

Hey I'm Chris. I'm a brand new member and I'm excited to get everyone's feedback. So I recently bought a 2002 325xi with 169,000 miles for 2000. Every thing seemed solid until I the CEL came on with a P0500 code. I know I need to buy a different computer to find the root of my problem. But right now I don't have time for that so I'm trying to just trouble shoot what it is. I've read alot of similar stories how they have the trifecta just like I do. ABS DSC and brake and the CEL(my speedometer works fine). More often than not it seems to be the ABS module. My questions are basically where would you guys start the troubleshooting? By testing the speed sensors? If it turns out to be an ABS module does that mean I need the pump too. I'll also have to get the module coded at a dealership correct?

Any input is welcome thank you.

That code indicates one or more wheel speeds sensors is having issues. So, the first thing is to find out which sensor is acting up. Check the software section of this forum to find out what software you need to determine which sensor needs attention. Also, check the sensors’ wiring as that can cause issues.

    SOLVED..... (maybe)

So I wrongly assumed the worst thinking it was my abs module. Even though my basic OBDII scanner said it was a wheel speed sensor. So from my understanding the right rear wheel controls cruise control and the left rear controls speedometer. My cruise control didn't work so I swapped the two wheel speed sensors to make sure it wasn't just a faulty cruise control. Sure enough after I swapped them I lost my speedometer but regained my cruise control. I replaced the speed sensor and everything seems to have corrected itself... There has been one hiccup, after getting my car inspected on my way home my car beeped at me and all the lights came back on minus the CEL light. I also noticed my cruise control no longer worked.. So I started thinking the other old sensor went. I got home, frustrated and went to bed. Next morning I'm driving it around and all the lights go off I check my cruise control, doesn't work so now I'm really confused. 15 minutes later I check it again and its working.. Hasn't given me any more issues other than that. Also on a side note. My windshield wipers decided park was in the middle of the window and has been like this since i bought the car.. Yesterday out of nowhere they decided to go back down into where park actually is and have been working perfect ever since.
