I don't think the disa valve is working on my son's 2000 323i. I never really drove it until recently and it seems short on horsepower. The pin, flapper and big O ring are new. It failed the vacuum test when the flapper valve returned to its default position without any resistance while covering the hole with my thumb... I tried to remove the round cover to check the vacuum bladder but could not get it off. I did not want to break it and suddenly have a major vacuum leak and then be forced to buy a disa. Is that even supposed to come apart? The car is old with 184k. Is it worth it to put a new one in? What will it help considering it seems ok now, just not very quick, which is good since it's my son's anyway. He does not need to go faster.

Yup, the DISA is shot. A factory DISA isn’t cheap but a cheap DISA won’t last. Fcpeuro has a DISA made by Rein for $160.
The diaphragm is not a serviceable part. You need a new DISA. I replaced mine last July and caught a sale at eEuroparts.com - a new Bosch unit for $196 to my door. Sadly, that price is now up to more than $300. You could start perusing the Pick-N-Pulls but these are parts that get picked quickly.
