One quart every 3-4k miles is nothing, I wouldn't worry about it. In any case, from what I've garnered on the various BM sites, BMW can't build a reliable V8. Enjoy yours for the time being and don't fret....

Correct, I think they built it that way, the oil burn is intentional due to higher cylinder pressures and ring seal lubing, I think. Apparently its even worse in the M6 where I hear you need to carry oil with you in the trunk since it swallows a quart every 1000 miles or so.

They don't build them like they used to.

One quart every 3-4k miles is a drop in the bucket. Many of the higher mileage cars are burning a quart every 5-600 miles. Do a search for valve stem seals and you'll find part of the problem. And what's worse, is that the N63 engine is wearing out the valve guides. There's been a few cars we've done seals on, and in another 10k miles its back to the way it was before. Have sent a few pairs of cylinder heads to the machine shop for guide replacement.

That's not a bad idea. It's what a lot of owners do. There's a reason you can buy a $100k car for 10 or 20k a few years later.
