What Better Way to Start the Ownership Journey than with a Roadtrip!

Many years ago I owned a '95 740i that I eventually sold with around 240k miles on it. After years of driving trucks and Suburbans for family / work reasons, I am finally getting back into E38 ownership. I've been looking around for a while and never really found anything locally (DFW) that piqued my interest (mostly the long wheelbase for family roadtrips and an interesting color).

Casting the net somewhat wider picked up quite a few choices, and I finally settled on a Royal Red '99 in Los Angeles.

Essentially a one-owner example with 108k miles on the clock and serviced under contract with the local dealership.

I've timed the purchase with a work trip, so I'll fly to LA on Wednesday and pick up the car. Then head to Phoenix for client meetings on Thursday and finally home to Fort Worth on Thursday evening / Friday. What better way to get to know your new car, right?

I'm looking forward to the trip and glad to be back in the community. I'm already planning years' worth of projects and upgrades...

Very nice find. Love the color too.

These things love the highway. You may want to have a BMW indy just do some basic maintenance on it before the trip, like oil, coolant flush, air filter, etc. and do an overall inspection. Peace of mind since you are not familiar with the car yet.

Congrats...and oooo...do a "pictorial travelog" along the way home....keep us updated in this thread.

Besides...I haven't been on a roadtrip in a while...I can do it virtually through you.

Kouks - I thought about having a local shop look at before setting off, but I just don't have the time. Sooo, will have my credit cards and AAA membership and hope for the best!

Qsilver7 - Will take many pictures, but not sure about hosting so that I can post them. Any ideas?

diefncy - not surprised at all. glad to hear it is as nice as the pics show - they're usually not!

Great job on the purchase! And honestly, how cool is it that another member here has gone out to take a look at it? That's community!

Enjoy the drive, and welcome back to the club =)

If the resolution is low enough...(like 800x600 and lower) you can upload them to your account here and insert under "manage attachments" (you have to click on the GO ADVANCED tab). If you have your cam's resolution set high like 2400x1800...this site will reject the uploading of the image as an attachment because of bandwidth restrictions.

Or you can upload the images to a pic sharing host site which will assign a URL address to the images. Make sure you give permission to "share" the URL address (link) if uploading to a host site.

I'm long overdue for an update - sorry. It's a busy time of year in the public accounting world.

The drive from LA to DFW was flawless. Easily the most comfortable road trip I've ever taken. Between delays, client meetings, and having a tight schedule, I didn't get many pics along the way. I got a couple in the desert, though.

The car is in great shape, but has a few projects to keep me busy for a while. Things like seatback pockets, headliner, and some busted stitching on the passenger seat. Also, it is missing floor mats, the rear seat foot rests, and only has one key. Really, small annoyances that are easily remedied.

The more immediate needs are new trunk struts (to save my head!) and some front suspension work. After that, new wheels and tires. I'm thinking M-Pars, but will also look at Apex and other aftermarket wheels. Should be fun!

Congrats on the new purchase...and thanks for the pic. I'm truly enjoying the virtual escape! Since I'm at work...I'm sipping some nice cold bottled water and stretching my legs as I gaze off across the serene desert scape to the beautiful view of the mountains....ahhhhh, yeeesssss.

Glad you enjoyed the pic. Unfortunately, most of the driving was at night, so not many good photo ops.

I was amazed that I averaged about 26mpg on the drive. I was anticipating low 20's, max. Nice upgrade from my Suburban where I usually averaged around 14mpg!
(I checked my odometer against the mileage markers and came up with an extra mile on the odometer for every 200 miles driven. So 0.5% on tires with ~30% tread left. Probably go the other way with new tires.)

Granted, I was right around the speed limit the whole way (on account of not having any license plates yet), but that to me is still good mileage.

Gorgeous car and nice pickup! I love royalrot and have the same color... Looks like the front bumper was replaced at some point with the 01 style with the body matching painted valance? You can tell because the rear bumper and skirts are still black...

Wow - how did I not notice that until now? Now I'm curious to do some poking around and see if it is replaced or simply painted.

Maybe not that big of a deal... These front bumper always get damaged somehow someway in their lives since coming off the production line...
