Am considering changing from a 2008 GTI to a ZHP, mainly as a daily driver, with the occasional (monthly) weekend road trip. Have been researching issues (VANOS, cooling system, CCV, sub-frame separation, oil filter housing gasket, etc.).
I know now this topic has been covered extensively, but:
1. Is this a good/bad platform for a willing but beginner DIYer?
2. Is $2,000/year in maintenance reasonable, high, or low, assuming (a) I start with a well-cared-for specimen, (b) I DIY most things within reason for a relative novice, and (c) I go to an independent mechanic for more advanced issues?
3. What range should I expect to pay for a well-maintained ZHP with 50k - 75k on the odometer?
4. Finally, impressions/comments from anyone that has experience with both the Mark V GTI and the E46 ZHP?
Thanks.

1) Yes
2) Yes
3) Skip the ZHP. It is a horrible value. 330i = $5k. ZHP with +10hp and fuzzy wheel $13k. Crack pipe stupidity.
E39 DIYs done: Wipers, O2 sensors , MAF , Upper/Lower Intake Boots , FSU , ABS module fix , Power Steering Reservoir , Changed Rear Differential Oil , DISA , SAP, Vacuum lines , Radar Detector Hardwire , Fuel Filter , LED Angel Eyes , Headlight Adjusters--> [1],[2], [3] , Headlight Polishing, Punted: Fan Clutch/Tensioner/Pulleys , Oil cap O-rings , Window regulator ,Crumbling Cowl
Thanks. Fair point on the ZHP. What about the suspension? I suppose that if one of the underlying assumptions of getting an E46 is that you will be doing some maintenance, maybe there is a real arbitrage between getting a ZHP and just upgrading the suspension on the base 330. And getting an Alcantara steering wheel!
The suspension differences between a ZHP and a 330Ci with the sport package are minimal. I bet even a person who’s driven a ZHP for years would b hard pressed to tell the difference.
