Can't get this &%$*#@ driveshaft out of the hub

I'm trying to push the splined axle out of the hub on a Z3M suspension arm, and failing. I got the LHS unit out pretty easy with a cheesy puller, but the RHS unit, nah uh. So I made a tool to do it. Nup, it just bent the steel. For reference, that bolt is a fine pitch 16mm thing.

So I sprayed it with Reductuer H-27 and left it for a few days....nup. So I heated it, then I froze the shaft, then heated it, then belted the bolt head with a BFH while the thing was under pressure....nup. So I made a rig to hold it in my 20T press, and just started bending shit, so I reinforced the jig, and then blew the center out of the 330i disc I had it mounted on (I thought that would happen, FWIW).

Running out of ideas here, this thing is kicking my butt!

Unfortunately this is common on the older cars, everytime I do one i bolt a bearing puller to it and tighten the bolt till its very tight under pressure, and swing an 8lb sledge at it with all I got, normally on the 10th try it comes out.

I thought they were hard to get out of my E39....
I put a lot of pressure on it with a heavy duty puller, then gave it a solid smack or ten with with a 3lb sledge...

I'm thinking of buying a hydraulic hand pump and a 20T piston next. Then whip up a steel backing plate with 5x120 PCD holes in it. Or, maybe a 30T piston..... :-/

I put never seize on everything when I assemble so that I never have issues in the future. If it’s never been apart and it’s from a place that uses a lot of salt it’s going to suck to get apart.

I did my rear wheel bearings a while ago. I borrowed the the ‘wheel bearing kit’ from a tech that was working for a BMW dealer. The kit consists of three suit case size boxes of CNC machines bits and pieces including a fancy hydraulic pump and actuator. Once I figured out how to assemble all the bits it was completely effortless to remove the shafts and replace the bearings.

Those spines will be shining and coated with Never Seize before it goes back together, bank on it.

I hit up an old friend of mine who is a machinist, he said "come on over and grab my Enerpac hydraulic with the 30T piston". Apparently it has all sorts of puller jaw attachments and all, so that ought to do one of two things; f##k it or fix it!

I've messed up an entire rear trailing arm trying to press one of these out!

    I wish you luck!

Yikes. Salt sucks in so many ways. Sometimes a blunt tip air chisel properly directly to the shaft can help it "pop" while the puller is pushing on it.

You got the big 30T piston coming, so that should get it.

My friend was surprised at the pressure it took, but he didn't need to try for very long before it let go with a big bang.

That is the biggest puller I've ever had eyes on, the thing weighs a ton! Made in the USA, and made to last!
