    cv axles

Just got done replacing the front cv joints on my grandsons 2001 325xi. The drivers side came out of the hub fine, but hit, put a slide hammer on it trying to force it, and lubed the heck out of it. In the end, I cut the axle off and took of the hub where I could get a good swing with a sledge on the end of the axel. It finally came out, but boy was that a lot of work. Was there a smarter way to get rusted axels out of the hub? I also had trouble reinserting the cv joint on the passenger side and ended up pulling the C-clip out of the old joint because the new one was slightly out of round.

The simplest solution is to buy a RWD car.

I just had this problem yesterday. First the tire was stuck on the hub so I had to pry it off from between the spokes and then grind all the rust and corrosion off the hub and wheel. Then the axle wouldn't come out of the hub, even when whacking it, so I decided to take the knuckle off the strut tower and the bolt holding the knuckle to the strut tower sheared off. So I ended up taking the entire strut tower and hub assembly off with the driveshaft still in it and pressing it out on my 20 ton press and it took a LOT of pressure to do so. then I drilled the bolt out and replaced it with a nut and bolt combo and finally got it all put back together. Ended up taking 12 hours from start to finish.

I see you're from Lawrence. If you ever see a graugrun colored E46 in the Prairie Park area, wave.
