Just went in ‘neutral’ (no drive) after going over a speed bump (slowly!) P,locks the wheels, everything else is freewheelin’ ,so here we go again, last time it cost £450 for a new forward clutch pack, think I may have to go FULL RECON this time (never go full recon) he quoted about a grand four years ago, let’s hope it ain’t gone up ! (97’ 840) this one...

Ok then,it turns out it had snapped the main shaft in the gearbox,so he replaced that and put a new pump in....£550 (bargain) However,if I give it a ‘bootfull’ (hard acceleration) on the motorway,it won’t change down ! I can change with the tiptronic into 5th,but otherwise it just stays in third or fourth....it WAS doing this before the gearbox went, any ideas ? Is it a ‘kick down’ adjustment or something...it’s fine when just cruising....cheers,Joel.

The usual cause is gearbox excessive temperature as measured by the sensor within the gearbox. To reduce torque the EGS locks out 4th and 5th. This is often a failure of the sensor itself rather than real over-heating.
The best plan is to use INPA to read the live data from the gearbox before the car is started - and see if the temperature is raised (probably a faulty sensor) or normal (possibly the gearbox cooler is blocked with leaves).

Has the valve body ever been serviced?
What "thumbs up" really means
Cheers Tim,will check it out, dunno if the valve body has been serviced,I’ll give the geezer a bell next week....this not changinging up thing has happened in the past, but normally when the rear tyres are low on air....weirdly...

That's not weird - that's normal behaviour - it is designed to stop gear changes when turning sharp corners as the gear-change might destabilise the car. If you have a tyre that has a much lower pressure compared to the other on the same axle, the EGS thinks the car is turning a corner as the deflated tyre rotates faster - so make sure tyres on an axle have the same pressure and rolling diameter!

Sorry I can't help with your transmission woes, but I have to say, I am really digging this picture.
