Just picked up a 2008 coupe, what appears to be the rear arm rest velcros open then lies on the seat like a pillow. There is a small plastic box that i can take out of the hole but the whole thing has me quite puzzled. Can someone shed some light on the pupose of this assembly? It doesnt appear to be broken, just perplexing.

Yes, 2008 v8 M3 in a blue so deep it looks black.
I was told this is for the ski/snowboard bag and provides access to the boot. When i bought it I believed it to be an armrest, i have been educated
