Hey guys,
I hope you don't mind a cross post from the E38 forum (and from bimmerfest), but I think some of you guys might be able to help with a radio problem. After all, our anatomies aren't all the different
I have a 2001 750il with NAV and DSP. When I start the car, I see the NAV screen acting normal, but there's no sound out of the speakers. I can browse radio stations, and it'll even display the name of the station and the current artist, but no sound. The DSP icon in the menu is missing from the 16:9 MID.
NAV doesn't work either. The NAV CDROM won't eject the current disk, so it must be old and dead. When I try to get NAV info like the maps, the radio display says "please insert BMW NAV disk". I have ordered a previously working MKIII from ebay, but that didn't fix the problem.
The CD changer for the radio has been disconnected for a Dice audio input, and that has worked for a long time. As of now, I'm not getting sound from that, either.
All fuses are good, and connections going to the DSP look fine. I unplugged it all and plugged it back in, and I'll hear the car ding (like when you put the key in the ignition). I also replaced the DSP amp from a used working one on eBay, but no luck there.
I know there's lots of forum posts out there, but it's a little convoluted. Help?
The amp's gone kaput. DSP amps are dropping like flies, bad solder points on the boards I've been told, my DSP amp in my wagon went bad a little over a year ago. it started by losing the highs, got real flat then nothing, just like yours, everything still works, just no sound. You can replace the amp with another one, who knows how long that lasts. Personally, I'd like to get my hands around the neck of the BMW engineer responsible for the crappy sound, probably the same idiot that designed the cup holders too. I've been using one of those Bose bluetooth speakers for now, I bought a Kenwood head unit, Alpine Type R speakers, Kicker subs, Alpine amps for the drivers and the subs. I just need time to gut out the car so I can run all new cables.

I did replace the amp with a known working amp (well, says the ebay seller). I never had any bad sounds or music sounding like garbage; I just started the car one day and didn't hear any music.
My sound stopped. It was the amp. Went with an Alpine 007. Touchscreen, Siri, text to voice etc. Great decision. I wouldn’t put another dime in the OE system!

Here's a little follow up for future readers: I replaced the C34 radio module with a $30 one from eBay and that restored the radio. Sounds great now. Thanks all.
