97 bmw 318i stock m44, manual trans
Had a code for the maf.unplugged it and ran fine so i bought a new one.cleared the codes and the new maf does the same thing.will stall and will not start unless its unplugged.
What could be the cause
A large vacuum leak. Smoke test it.

Could be something else to, scan again. Could also be a fluke that it runs when the mafs is unplugged.

The code i get when the maf is plugged in is p0100.itll start if i keep the throttle feathered
I was actually going to suggest that (to apply the gas when cranking). So it could be your throttle position sensor. If you have ASC+t make sure you get the correct sensor.

It's $35 at rmeuropean.com, but I did not verify whether or not it's the correct one (tps or ASC).

The asc has been bypassed but the housing is still there with the asc plugged in but the cable assy has been taken off.i still have the cable and motor that the cable is hooked to
I'm just saying, be sure to order the correct part.

When i first got the new maf ot ran great for about the first 20 miles then stalled.with it unplugged it also runs great with no idle surges or skips.if it was the tps wouldnt it throw a code?
You can test the TPS, but it's best to use an old fashioned analog meter, that way you can watch for dead spots when you open and close the butterfly.

I do have a analog multimeter.. would you care to share how i can test it?
Unplug the tps, connect the meter to the first two terminals, depending on the ohm range (high or low) see which works, as you open the butterfly (find where the throttle cable meets the engine) open the valve slowly. The needle on the meter should move smoothly across the range, if there are any spots where it drops quickly to zero then that's a dead spot, your interested in the beginning of the range. Also try pins 1 and 3.

Pin 1 and 3 read about 4.5k. Pins 1 and 2 were about 4k and slowly to wot went to about 2.5k smoothly. Is 2.5 to 4k the range?or should it go down to about 1.5
Also the motor has been changed out before i got it. It is the m44 engine cause it has the plastic thermostat housing. Just wondering if all m44 engines have the same sensors thats compatible with my year cars obd2
You can compare part numbers by going to realoem.com select the classic category.
For mor diagnostic help download a copy of the Bentley manual.

Part number for the maf and tps are the same as what i need and have.
I downloaded the manual and tested the tps. Manuel says 5v pin 3, pin 1 and 3 about 4k ohms and pin 1 and 2 1-4kohms
Pin 3 im getting 5.20v
Pin 1 and 3 getting 4.03k
Pin 1 and 2 getting 4.57 closed and 1.704 open.
All seem good to me but pins 1 and 2 seems alittle high to me.is my tps good or bad?
Just to backup a little. You said a new MAF but what brand is it? Also I would be looking for vacuum leaks as was mentioned. Without the MAF the engine can't measure incoming air and runs on default tables which will work but aren't optimized. When you plug it in and it is measuring but if there is excess air leaking in somewhere it will not be measuring and reporting that air to the ECU and will run very poorly or not at all.

Its a cheap ebay maf.i cleared the codes and plugged it in and have about 20 miles on it with no lights yet and runs smooth and steady idle at about 850rpms
Be careful of cheap ebay MAFS, some are brand new but are complete junk, they put resistors instead of the proper hot film sensors. Post a link to the exact auction you bought. Use your "purchase history" to find it easily.

I can't tell if it's good or not. Gotta be careful of cheap china junk that tries to mimic OEM.

I just got it cause it said it was hot wire type
850 rpm sounds pretty high imo. I idle around 600-650. When i deleted asc i removed the secondary throttle body and got a different intake elbow. Have you checked your elbow for cracks? Pretty common spot

Im gonna take it all apart today to check it and so i can measure for aluminium pipe to build a cai
The 4-banger idles a little higher AFAIK.

I think i bought a junk maf, the new one has a resistor on the board thats in the housing and the old(bosch) didnt and that board broke when i touched it so it was very fragile.
