I will soon be replacing my leaky valve cover gaskets, and am assembling parts and tools...
I realize reinzosil hardens, and hylomar doesn't, should I be using one over the other? Are there places i.e. valve cover gasket or intake gaskets that I should specifically use one or the other?
Any help would be appreciated....
Regular black RTV is fine. Put some on the gasket itself on the half moons. Then on the engine, a dime sized dab at the creases where the timing covers meet the heads. That’s it.
I followed several members suggestions when I resealed the rubber intake manifold gaskets on my car recently. I used the Reinzosil. I only use the Hylomar on the gear covers of my formula car transaxle because it does not stick to metal like rv sealant so its very easy to clean off. And, Hylomar does not last from my experience. Seems like it breaks down from oil after several months. I think its really only popular for those assemblies that will be resealed occasionally because its so easy to clean off, it just wipes off surfaces.
So I cleaned rubber gaskets well and soaked them with silicone spray and then put them in ziplock bags and left them for some weeks until I was ready for reassembly. Supposedly the silicone will help revitalize the rubber. Then I cleaned the contact surfaces and applied Reinzosil on surface facing heads, waited several minutes, and then bolted them down. Did the same on intake manifolds and then stuck them onto gaskets/studs. You only need about 1mm of sealant. I believe the torque for nuts on head studs is around 17lbs and only 7lbs on manifold nuts.
That’s totally unnecessary
Reinzosil all the way.
Reinzosil
...agreed,
