    2007 BMW 328XI wrong oil

    Hello all.

I took my 2007 BMW 328xi in for it's first oil change since purchasing it and the mechanic put in Castrol Edge Professional fully synthetic 5W30 LL3.

I don't believe this is the right oil for the car based on some research I have done.

I am 150 miles from the nearest BMW dealer I would have taken it there. I called them and they say as long as it is fully synthethic and 5w30 that's fine. I called Castrol and they say that oil does not meet BMW long life 04 oil.

So I am asking is this totally the wrong oil and needs to get changed out or is it ok for now?

Thank you in advance for any response on the matter.

It's fine. Change it in 5k-7.5k miles (this is your normal interval, right? you're not going by the ridiculously extended factory intervals, right?).

    Thank you for the reply.

No. Those oil change intervals seem ludicrous.

Well LL-03 doesn't exist, so I am going to think you mean LL-04 which isn't authorized in the States. So you need a LL-01 oil which can normally go around 10k. As you live in a lovely cold place I would recommend a 0W-40 European Car Formula from Mobil 1, as this meets the LL-01.

I am looking at the bottle and it distinctly says Castrol Edge Professional SAE 5W-30 LL03 full synthetic motor oil.

Well, then Castrol must be confused as there are on 3 longlife oils and LL-03 isn't a BMW approved oil.

Dworthy, this is exactly my angle. This oil is not for a BMW apparently. So my mechanic screwed up I take it.

My next question is will hurt anything or should I just go like 3-5k and get it changed.

Stop overthinking this. The oil is fine. LL-xx standards are BMW-specific, but not having one doesn't mean the engine is going to seize up. Hell, it's probably just a typo. That oil is probably ACEA A3/B4, which is a similar spec anyway. Just change it after 5k or 7.5k or whatever your reasonable interval is and call it done.

    +1

5-7.5k will be just fine on that oil, you just cannot leave it in the crankcase for the duration of the service indicator.

If it were my car, I'd leave it in there and change it with the bmw long life spec oil at 10k. The only times I've known people to have problems related to oil was when there was none left in the pan or they never changed it.

Thank God it was the"professional" grade, the amateur grade would have seized the crank in 10 miles.(marketing rhetoric)

Nope, actually, it was the "Professional" that killed it....that's for Jaguars, LandRovers and Fords. The amateur formula is 0-30 Edge.....which just happens to meet BMW LL-01 standards, which makes it OFFICIALLY okay for a BMW.

Good oil is good oil. Use full synthetic by a quality manufacturer, change it every 6-7000 miles, and use OEM filters.

Yeah, but that special Castrol Miky showed has TITANIUM TECHNOLOGY.

WTF is that? Maybe it's Intelligent Titanium? Why is there titanium in my oil? Didn't I want to keep metal OUT of my oil?

I'm going to go to the track in two weeks. I think I'm going to put some stupid amateur RedLine in my engine. At least it's Group 5 stupid. No one has tried to teach it to be smart, or fed it Titanium.

I love this forum, we only fight about oils to make fun of people who fight about oils.

Naw....10W is for winter, 40 for summer. (But us modurn kar guys use this fancy 5W-30, or 10-60 even! Some of it has essence of Titanium in it, just to confuse the guys at Blackstone Labs..... )

I got in an oil war because I tried to explain that liquid gets thinner when heated, hence, oil was always "multi-weight" I see some ARCO Graphite oil on Craig's list, remember that stuff?

ARCO....weren't they the people that used a dinosaur after Sinclair quit?

Liquid gets thinner when it's heated? Gee willakers, is that why snow melts?

What I like best is the graphite based liquid for stopping brake squeal.....you put it on your pads.......hmmmmm. what's wrong with this picture?
