Hey guys.
I've been looking into purchasing a 2000 BMW 330Ci.
I've been offered one for $3000 and has done about 130,000 kms and don't know if it is the right move.
What are some of the common problems experienced by this model? How much is this car actually worth? How reliable is this car?
Car reliability is directly proportional to the timeliness and quality of service performed. Is a service history available for review? If not, assume a minimum of $2K in parts (tires/coolant system/tune up/fluids/filters/bushings/battery/etc.) to get the car in condition for reliable daily driver duty.
If you service the car yourself, then an old BMW can be a very rewarding experience. If you have a shop service the car, an old BMW can become unreasonably expensive for a pleasant experience. If the car is not serviced, then an old BMW will likely become a memorable experience for all the wrong reasons.
Per the above, value of the car is dependent on past service and owner treatment. $3K may be a great deal or a complete waste of resources - depending on condition and options. The engine in the 330 type is a nice trade between economy and performance for a daily driver.
