I'm about to install brand new M60 valve covers on my 540 with M62 engine. In order to keep my original M62 ignition coils some mods would be required to studs on M60 valve covers so I just decided to get M60 ignition coils. Especially since all of my M62 coils are original. While I have no problems with coils, 18 years / 123K miles of heat and thousands of firings had to take some toll on their effectiveness.
After receiving new M60 coils I realized that they will fit later engines valve covers (M62 and M62TU) due to their 4 bolt hole square design vs 2 hole on later coils.
If you check REALOEM and BMW catalog, they show no match but at the same time they show M60 coils compatible with 840CI with M62 engine.
Here are some pictures and I got genuine Bremi coils for $41 each including boots which is a hell of a deal. Angles of pictures are somewhat misleading as you'd think they're different sizes but they're identical in dimensions.

I ordered 8 coils(with boots) off of eBay for grand total of $80. From California. Mainly to test to see if this longstanding idle and low rpm hiccup with no CEL is coil related. $80 cheaper than an Indys hour of diagnostic time and I get spare coils for my toolbox
Z, you lucked out, nice.

Thats a good price. Where did you get them?
Also, great sleuthing figuring the M60 coils fit the 840. Send an update when you install them and let us know how it works out.
I guess the electrical characteristics are identical and the M62 coils since they fit the 840 with M62.

Not bad idea. I'd probably do the same in your position.

But when I purchased them they were on clearance for $42 and combined with $10 off for $199+ orders, brought it to $41 per coil.
Now they're back to about $46 per coil after discount which is still decent price.
I should be done with installation this weekend and I'll post an update.
What's the reasoning for the M60 valve covers instead of the M62?

My current one that are leaking and peeling can't be powder coated again due to some areas being very thin and actually slowly seeping oil through it (Thanks to morons at powder coat shop who apparently decided to blast the covers with shrapnels -long story)
it's getting harder to find decent set on ebay and plus the fact that I don't feel like going through cleaning, blasting, degreasing, powder coating etc...I just decided to get a new set.
Here in USA, it's about $600+ for a set but I was able to get set of M60 covers from Schmiedmann for $470 shipped to USA.
They're basically direct fit to M62 (not M62TU) with exception of coils which you could modify studs on covers or get new M60 coils as I did which they fit M62 heads and plugs.

I know this is an old thread.
How did this work out ??
I've sold the car soon after it and M60 valve covers held up great but IIRC correctly, I've had issues with coils and went back to OEM.
The issue was random misfires and not the actual fitment.
It seems Bremi is hit and miss depending on model.
The "new" Bremi is not the same quality as one that came originally on our cars from factory.
I think I went with Bosch Made in Slovenia which worked great on several of my cars.
These are genuine product and Bosch has big factory in Slovenia.
