Have a parking brake issue with my 01'. I can set the parking brake and I am able to release it via a handle. However, the parking brake release handle doesn't retract back into rest position.
I pulled dash trim off and I can see the mechanism. If I manually push on number 6 (I think) towards the firewall this will put the parking brake handle back into rest position and I can use it again. I can't figure out what's preventing the release handle from going back. Springs 7 both appear to be fine. Is there another spring somewhere under the car that pulls the main cable back?

Yes, part number 8 is a gas strut - and yours has run out of puff!

Is is really that simple? I did notice fluid at the bottom of the strut so I suspected it may have leaked out. Is that strut BMW specific or could I get it at any part store that sells hood struts and such?

Id source the BMW part number. Some cheaper struts have an imbalance of force, I've seen some bend trunk decks and so on. It's certainly engineered with a specific amount of dampening to work as it does and not wear out other parts in the process. An aftermarket might work, but it might also cause damage.

I just looked at it again and I don't think it's the strut. The pedal is being lifted back up. It's the release handle that's not being pulled back into the dash.
