    Oil Pan Removal

I just removed 22 short 10mm bolts, 2 long 10mm bolts, and 3 torx bolts (via the bell housing) and my pan doesn't seem to want to drop. I've also unbolted the power steering pump bracket from the pan. I don't think it's hung up on anything, but rather that the gasket is just glued in place. The dipstick is still attached but it should just pull out as far as I know. Any recommendations for getting it free aside from beating on it with a mallet?

It will be a little stuck on but you should pull the dip stick out first.

There are FOUR long bolts with 10mm heads. TWO are 100mm long and TWO are 64mm long. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_6075

BTW, is the engine IN or OUT of the car? If still IN, the pan will not come off without dropping the front subframe.

Yep, figured that out eventually. There's two more medium length 10mm bolts in back accessed by two holes in the bell housing. They go into small tabs in the oil pan way back in there. Then a couple more whacks with the mallet and the gasket broke. You have to sort of slide the pan forward initially to clear those rear tabs. The dipstick pulled out fairly easily, and I carefully lowered it while guiding out the entire dipstick assembly.

And yes the engine is in the car, but I had already stripped basically everything else off the underside including the subframe, steering rack, and control arms.

Why am I taking the pan off? I'm doing that to replace the gasket which was leaking, and to address the oil pump nut. While I'm in there, I'm putting in the Achilles baffles, upgraded pump, and reinforced pickup. It was a convenient time to to do this since I'm also dropping both subframes for reinforcement, replacing all the bushings/mounts/ball joints, and so forth. Figured I'd take everything apart ONE time and just get everything done.

I am trying to order replacement hardware as I have my oil pan out for the same reasons. Do you know what size the torx bolts are? Realoem doesn't make it clear which is which.

I think the three torx bolts are #5 in this diagram:

There's also a washer on them, but I'm not sure of the part #.

LOL. Yeah so this all started with me wanting to do some bushings and ball joints. Well if I'm gonna drop the subframes, I might as well reinforce them. Well, if I'm gonna drop the subframes, I might as well tackle the oil pan at the same time. Well, if I'm gonna take the oil pan off that's my one chance to do pump/pickup/baffles. Oh, and this would be a good time do upgrade steering racks. It goes on and on.

At least now I'm really excited for having my car back together and never really needing to mess with anything in the suspension or oil pan ever again. It should be tighter and more responsive than it was from the factory 20 years ago.
