Hello,
My friends own a 2001 7.40D and they are wondering if they can have "auto crank" feature on their car like I have on my 2000 5.40i. AFAIK these cars use the same EWS module.
If anyone has any info on the subject and can chime in, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hmmm...since there was no 740i diesel sold here in the States...we don't have anything to go by. But all V8s & V12s from around mid production 97 model year have the convenience start (auto crank) feature...you also have to have the automatic transmission. The manual tranny V8s didn't have the convenience start feature nor the models with an I6 engine.
If you have the 740d's owners manual...see if there's anything mentioned. If the V8 diesels don't have this feature...perhaps it has something to do with the starting procedure for that type of engine (like the glow plugs?).
{from 1997 e38 owners manual...this market only got V8 & V12 petrol e38s}
{from 2006 e53 owners manual...note the 3.0 (I6) doesn't have the convenience start feature...but the e53 V8s do}

maybe I should've asked the question without stating that it's a diesel the logic behind auto crank feature should be the same on either fuel type, as long as they are automatics. so let me renew my question;
how can the auto crank feature (convenience start) be activated on a car without it? you guys can as well consider it's another 540i without the feature and we want to activate it, but how? some technical info is needed on the subject. maybe an electrical diagram ?
It is not a function of the EWS - it is a function of DME 5.2 and later, and as you don't have the petrol DME you don't get auto-start!

I didnt know I had this, cool!
Thanks Timm...you saved me some time. I was searching through the BMW engine management PDFs for what you linked above.
To the OP...its not that you have a V8, too...its that you don't have a gas engine that has this feature designed into its electronic control module's (ECU's) design architecture. Your diesel V8 uses one of BMW's (digital diesel electronics)DDE engine management ECUs. Perhaps later iterations of DDE adopted auto start/crank?
