I'm bummed, but I'm staying with the E39s.
I've got my eye on a nice 2001 Schwartz 2 M-sport, but it has a couple of issues.
It needs TCGs and a new windscreen, and the bumper has a crack in it.
I'm considering getting it taken to an indy I trust for the TCGs and to have the windscreen changed, then patching the bumper crack with a little duct tape until I can have my body guys look at it. I suspect it's going to need replacing.
It's fully optioned, and otherwise looks in good condition. The pork chops are present and undamaged even!
A mate who is well versed in E39 is checking it out for me on the weekend. I hope the guy is ready to haggle because I want it for half of the $4500 he's asking, and in good condition it's only an $8000 car all day, any day in all reality.

I'll also buy my written off vehicle back at salvage auction, as I want the 6 speed back, and my 2 oldest sons will descend upon the remains like a flock of vultures as they both own E39s, and one needs panels lol

Are you planning on doing a 6-speed swap into this new E39?

Neither did I, but 3 panels required actual dent removal work, 7 panels requiring painting, as well as every single piece of plastic under the car from the pork chops and engine splash tray back to the side pieces under the doors was smashed. Along with the power steering pump getting smashed, it pushed the total repair bill up to 10k.

Ouch, that's a big repair bill. Hope your insurance company doesn't decide to total it.
Yeah they totalled it... I'm going to buy it back at salvage auction for the parts
I'm tossing up between 2 2001 M-sports...
One black on black (Schwartz 2), I could get for peanuts, but needs timing chain guides immediately ... Which I'll have done before I fly down to pick it up. I'll have the guides new timing chain oil pump. Chain oil. Oil pump. All the gaskets replaced so it's pretty much nothing to worry about engine wise... And just a couple of cosmetic issues to sort (inner guard liners and a cracked bumper) and a NAV retrofit to get it how I'd want it... And it's got BBS LM single piece 18x8.5" wheels all round instead of the factory style 66 staggers, but I'd put my style 42s on it anyway...
Or an Oxford green with sand beige interior, with 100000 fewer km (60000miles), 6 months newer, but with NAV, and possible TCGs in the future at who know how many Km. It does appear to have fewer stone chips on the nose. It too needs inner guard liners, but the bumper is in good condition and it has still got its style 66 wheels. They're asking too much for it, but I think I could talk him down to about a grand over what I think the black one is going to cost me to get into drivable condition with a completely sorted motor.
Both vehicles need tyres.

Maybe the Oxford green, a lot less miles and doesn't need guide. Does it have a V8 in it?
Both are 540s
If I get the black one I can afford to have it put into a friend's workshop to get the timing chain, the guides, all the gaskets, and the oil pump and chain replaced and have change left over to do the bumper and inner liners and still be under what they're asking for the green one.
I'll still have to do the guides at some point on the green one, not now, but a few years down the track.
However I'm going to look at it today and I'll see what I think of it.

Green car has a bunch of codes, nothing insurmountable...
The intensive headlight wash isn't present, even though it has factory xenons and it has the intensive wash tag and the washer fluid bottle, and it's missing the ducts that go from the bumper to the brake ducts, which leads me to think it's had a front end incident at some point and it's had a second hand (but still genuine) bumper fitted that didn't have the washers on it.
The muffler has 3 big holes cut in it.
Codes...
Multiple misfire codes (he says he replaced all the coils after some misfires), post cat lambda on both banks, seat occupancy sensor, fuel tank sensor errors on both sides, the OAT sensor has been torn out.
And it's got the usual leaks.
Hard decision to make.
Both cars aren't without their faults.
I'm just wondering what one I'm going to have better satisfaction out of.

My son suggested a 2005 545i...
I now have one less son....

Ok... Guy with the green one is ready to negotiate...
I've priced up the retrofit to put the headlight washers back into the bumper, and the usual pork chop replacements. I've also priced up the missing brake air ducts, oxygen sensors, and of course a muffler replacement.
He really should have taken my original offer before I had a chance to get proper prices instead of my educated guesses...

We've come to an agreement.. He's getting the issues I have with the vehicle repaired, I'll go 500 over my offer.
He's got a deposit now and the repairs have been arranged already.
I'm pretty happy with that overall.
I get a fully loaded 2001 facelift 540i M-sport. In great condition for a pretty good price.

Heck yeah! Glad it all worked out. So now you get a slightly newer and more powerful BMW, sounds like a happy ending to me. Especially once you do the manual swap.
1995 525i 5-speed - Thread
I had plans of putting a Frankenengine in the old one....
Now I'll investigate things like changing cam profiles since I don't believe you can do the M60B44 with the vanos engines.
Still.... New challenges ahead, and I'm looking forward to the manual swap.
Now if only they'd hurry up and list my old car so I could buy it back!

I now own a 2001 540i facelift Msport

Details?
Still shaking it down...
I can hear I'm. Going to need to do sway bar bushings and link pins... But I have new ones on hand.
I did open the front of the head unit, and it's not going back up...
That's going to be a challenge.
Sent from my G8141 using Tapatalk
Wasn't such a challenge lol..
The tracks were just a little stuck, it went back with a little help pretty easily
