    Real world experience with 8 1/2” and 9 1/2” wide 17” wheels

Ok, I have a E36 currently on 17” x8” wheels with 40 offset, square, with 255 40’s in the rear and 235 45’s in the front. All fenders are rolled. The rear fenders are also slightly pulled. I am on adjustable coil overs with camber plates. No spacers. I do not have any rubbing issues.

I am considering new 17” wheels. The fronts are 8 1/2” with 30 offset. The rears are 9 1/2” with 20 offset. Does anyone have any real world experience with these wheel sizes?

    thanks in advance!

Very wrong rear offset for the E36. You want more like ET40 if you want decent rubber. If you want to stretch some skinny tires on and tilt the wheels in like some of the kids do, then you might be able to fit 17x9.5 ET20 rears but I don’t know for sure. You can fit 17x8 ET20 in the rear but not with more than maybe a 235/40/17 and lots of negative camber.

If you want a 9.5 inch wide rear I think 35 is the proper offset. I have no experience with wheels this wide, i just remember seeing a few apex fitment guides

I thought the rear offset was way out there but I could not visualize it. I was hoping to go to a 265 series tire in the rear but I am not about to kid stance the car. Thanks for the input

I run 275/40/17 on 17x9 ET42 and had to raise the rear and roll and pull the fenders. It does not really work. I will be installing flares. 255/40/17 is all you can reliably put in the arches with a reasonable ride height and not run a lot. Use flares if you want big rear tires and wheels — even the rivet on ones require cutting and welding of the metal underneath to provide clearance — it’s not quick and easy.
