I have a 1997 e38 740il. It was parked for 3 years and now I'm trying to bring her back to life. Long story short I removed the oil drain plug and a thread was broken . in I served it back in and it got stuck. I applied pressure down and and removed it. Well today I went and got a new plug . It went all the way in and wouldn't lock tight so I removed it. It came out but the threads was boogered. I think the threads in the pan are stripped. If seen some post about moving up to m12 1.75 self tapping bolt. What should I do?
Or replace the lower oil pan
Yeah, on that engine, I'd recommend just replacing the lower pan. A helicoil is the wrong choice anyway.
The pan already used an M12 x 1.5. If you were going to try for a simple drill and tap to a larger size, you'd go to a Mercedes 14 x 1.5
Really, most salvage places will have a lower oil pan, and that will be your best bet. Don't forget to buy a new gasket !

Check the bolts on the oil pump while you have the pan off. They are known to work loose on the early E38s. Also make sure there is no debris, i.e. bits of plastic, in the bottom of the oil pan.
Yeah, bits of plastic pretty much mean you're doing the timing rail job.
"Self-tapping bolts" are B.S.. NEVER EVER try that. Do it right, or don't do it.
