    E87 118i Using Oil

Hi Guys, my wife has an E87 118i that uses around 500ml to 1 litre of oil every 1000km and I think as a consequence has a terrible flat spot when you first accelerate away. The car has done 110,000km.

All my research shows a known problem with the CCV. So I ordered a new one only to find after stripping, that the car does not have any form of CCV!!! There is a pipe without a valve connected from the tappet cover directly into the inlet manifold.

So, I blocked the pipe into the inlet manifold (the manifold is lined inside with a thin layer of oil) and took the pipe from the tappet cover into a catch tank with a breather pipe. This made a radical difference to the performance of the car but unfortunately the released oil fumes are smelly and not ideal.

Any thoughts on how to address this issue? Maybe a higher viscosity oil - I currently use 5w60 full synthetic? A different oil ventilation system? Perhaps a proper oil catchment tank - just don't know where to run the breather side too.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the Forum!

What year is your car? This is normally a basic thing you should post as that car came with several motors, and it cross a span from 2003 - 2011.

No matter as I do believe that the CCV is inside the tappet or valve cover on that car. You can clean it out with a degreaser and make sure you inspect that plastic tappet/valve cover for it loves to crack.

Also you can look at installing a catch can, for this will take care of most of your oil burning problems, however it will need to be drained about every 5k-7k KM.

    Hey dworthy,

Thank you for the quick response. The car is a 2009.
Anywhere I could find images of the CCV within the tapet cover to allow me to know what I am looking for?
Secondly, if I installed a catch can, would I direct the vent side back into the inlet manifold?

    thanks again!!

What you would do is installed it between the tappet cover and the intake. I have upload a picture where the CCV lies and put a big red circle around it. You will need to remove the plastic cover to actually be able to see it completely.

As for the catch can, I would suggest to google it, for they are anywhere between 25 quid to 100 quid.

    Hi dworthy!!!

The image you show does not look like the tappet cover ... this is what my tappet cover looks like this.... N46B20?

Just a single outlet at the rear of the cover on the inlet manifold side. Oil filler cap is at the front of the motor on the exhaust side.

    thanks Again

Wasn't sure as they built two motors during that time frame, so I picked the N43 as it tends to be more common for me.

Yes, the single outlet is where you will find the CCV inside the tappet cover. Why did BMW do this you ask? Well I have no idea, for like the auto transmission having the filter installed permanently in the pan, it just doesn't make sense. I am starting to think they don't want these cars around for longer than 10 years so the typical German engineering is just bollock now.

There should be a plastic tube connected to there, you will have to replace it with a rubber hose to get the catch can to work. Most kits should include the rubber hose, but make sure it is a hi-temp hose and not a garden hose.

Thanks for the clarification dworthy!!! Will put in a catch can.
Is it worth opening the tappet cover to check the CCV?

No, not really as you may find that it is cracked or otherwise broken. Just remember that you will need to check that catch can every 5k-7k km to drain it. Once you get to know how much is be put into the catch can, you can start your own drain schedule.

Thanks dworthy!!!! Catch tank ordered!!! Will keep you posted. By the way, does it need a one way valve if the CCV is obviously broken?

Nope, as it will be pulling vacuum thru the catch-can anyway.

    Just my 2 cents:
I'd have replaced the valvecover with stock CCV apparatus. You've just got a broken part, it doesn't need re-engineering, just replacement.
5-60 is WAY too heavy for this engine!
And, not that it's a good thing, and your CCV diaphragm is undoubtedly torn, but 1 liter every 1000 kn is within BMW specs.

Chris, when you compare the price of oil for most people on this side of the puddle, it really adds up over time. So if it is drinking 1l of oil every 1k km, you will burn about 10l between oil changes, which will run you about 150 bucks just to replenish the oil loss. Sure a valve cover for that car runs about 300 bucks and if it dropped the oil consumption back to say 1 liter every 6k it would take a couple of years to pay for itself. I had suggested a catch-can as they tend to be a cheaper fix to this problem, but the owner must be more proactive in emptying the can.
