Can ECU shut off spark? Random misfires

back on bf.c after several years hiatus, glad to see it active.

92k changed plugs (ngk). Wasn't getting spark on #4 or #1. Only one coil on island so changed #1 coil. Also pulled coils from a well running car to swap. Now #4 gets spark but not #1,2 and 3. Power going to plug, coils test out within ohms. Coils work if I swap to other cylinders say #5. Totally baffled, can the ECU say no mas and not provide the pulse to spark?

If so, what is remedy?

Anyone know if ECU/ECM can do this or how ECU's behave regarding spark signals? Do ECU's go bad this way? Thx

My car has a problem with cylinder 6 misfire. Whenever it misfires for more than a few seconds, the ECU shuts off power to the coil until engine power is cycled. I think it does that to protect the catalytic converter.
