    tranny id's

I want to scrap one of my old trannys, can't figure out which one was from my 533, vs. a 95 M3, p/n didn't show on oem site, are the bell housing crank sensors proof of an 83 trans?, or any easier proof to look for?, one has getrag on it.

There should be part numbers, post them and we should identify it. My wild assed guess would be the larger one is from the e39

    A 533 would be an e28 most likely - not an e39.

I don’t recall ever seeing a bell housing mounted sensor on an e36.

yep,533 was an 83 e28, abused beyond belief, never quit, the other tranny has blank sensor holes but not used.

Post up some of the marks/numbers on both.
I’d also think the e36 would have a label stating mtl to be used (fluid).
and as mentioned the m3 tranny should be a zf.

    Oh it's a 95 M3 s50b30US which might have a getrag as I think the OBD2 M3's and 328's came with ZF

Show me the big 6's transmission, I'll recognize it. The 533 (M30) absolutely used the two bellhousing sensors for timing; the M50 did not.
