Best all round engine oil viscosity for UK climate

    Hi all,

Just wondering if any of the UK E31 owners have any thoughts on the best all round engine oil viscocity for the UK climate? Any particular preferences for a particular brand?

    Cheers

    Castrol Edge 0w-40 or 5w-40,
    MUST be European Formula!
the best all-around oil in ANY BMW.
My go to oil in most engines.

+1 ^ Edge is a great oil . I only use oil that meets VW spec 505.01 or the long life version 507.00 on all my vehicles. Oil meeting this standard gives additional protection due to its long lasting film strength. Basically VW PD engines run the injectors onto the cam requiring this added protection to stop cam wear.

I'm using Castrol GTX 10W-40, it's a bit quieter than the usual Magnatec - more info here:

On older vehicles, where synthetic oil is NOT required,
Castrol GTX 10W-40 IS my oil of choice also.
Btw, it is the only oil l have ever used on my 1996 Nissan Sentra,
and engine still humming along quietly at 70,000mi.

I'm using Castrol Edge 10W-60 in the S70 engine, with no complaints.
I'm assuming that many of you northern hemisphere owners maintain the practice of switching oil grade/viscosity with the change of season?
Not really an issue here in northern NZ, where temperatures don't get too severe at either end of the mercury scale.

    are slow
I'd use something high in Zinc.

Also to note Edge 5w40 probably isn't available in the UK, and is 20 years old at this point. The 0w40 is much better.

The 0W-40 makes the M62 engine a bit 'tappety'!

Guys thanks for the feedback, going to give this stuff a try:

    Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 5L https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004HL1H..._XUyNAbGYFYAV9

Now to decide on a suitable replacement transmission fluid...
