Engine shut down rattle?

Does every m20 kind of rattle like a rock in a shoe box for maybe 1 second when you turn the key off? What’s the source of the noise?

The m20 can make a familer knocking noise I just cant remember when I would hear it

Not sure if your car has a dual mass flywheel but that rattle you describe is the classic symptom of one that has failed.

Could be your transmission making that noise. The flywheels on M20 cars are not that great at dampening rattle, and the Getrag transmissions are inherently quite noisy.

Does it happen if you turn off the car with the clutch pedal held down?

I’ll try it, thanks. It doesn’t sound bad, just something making noise when things stop turning, I think it only happens when everything is heat soaked from a long drive.

Getrag rattle. The transmissions in these cars are known to rattle when in neutral.
