PS and PB suddenly not working

    86 635NA 99,000

Today I decided to see if I could fix a constant whine and leak from PS pump.
Level was 10mm below reservoir rim after 25 pumps with engine off but fluid was foamy ( air leak I guessed ).

I tightened Allen head screw on bottom of pump to stop small leak, I have used this screw in the past to drain pump.
This screw is not shown on Real OEM. so I'm not sure of it's purpose, can't tell if it has an Oring without removing it.

Tightened rubber hose on hard line on side of reservoir.

Went to back out of garage, no PS, no power brakes.
Tension on PS pulley was correct and pump was turning.

Reservoir was leaking out the top as if it had been overfilled.

    What's happening here?
    TIA
    Jim

I don't know what's going on, but I'd back off that allen head screw to see if the PS and PBs come back.

Maybe fluid not getting from reservoir to PS pump.

The screw on the bottom is puzzling, I'm not sure what it is there for.
I will back it out some, maybe it's blocking a fluid passage somehow, can't find a schematic on the PS pump.

Fixed:Bottom screw is actually a manufacturing design element according to Jay Stratton.I removed it and taped it with Teflon to stop leak.
I contacted Jay ( http://bigcoupe.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=28245 ) who told me to turn wheels lock to lock, while raising RPM to 2500, system drained into pump, filled it up correctly and 95% of whine is gone.

Many Thanks to Jay on this!

    Thanks Jim

on my PSP website, I call this purging the air from the pump and lines Link #3 page 7

    Here it is

    INSTALLATION SPECIAL NOTE
    (purging the air)

I have discovered that the (TYPE 1,2,3,4,5) Power Steering Pumps, are sometimes very difficult to purge, the air inside the pump and lines.
    And I have a solution.

I am sending your rebuilt PSP back to you full of ATF. (BENCH BLEED-PRIMED)
After the installation, before turning on the motor you must fill the Supply/Return line with ATF, from the Tank to the Pump.SO THERE IS NO AIR IN THIS LINE.
If there is any air in this line, my bench bleed will not work as soon as you start the motor the PSP will suck in the air from the supply line, into the PSP.
The pump will not pump air.
The installer needs to (WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING) turn the steering LEFT to RIGHT.
LOCK to LOCK, many times. And increase the motor RPM's as high as necessary to PUSH the air out. Try 2.000 to 3,000 RPM.
