Something I find really cool is the illuminated M/// lighting that shines on the pavement when I open either front door on my 99 E39 540i 6-Speed with Sports Package. I was just wondering if this a OEM BMW option; like the M-steering wheel and M-shift knob or something after market, thanks for your input.

Almost positive this is aftermarket. If anything like this is OEM, it is doubtful it was/is made for the E39.

Trick question! It's both.
The newer generation model ones are OEM as BMW got into this "mod" not too long ago.
Older generation models originate from aftermarket sources. (chiiiina)
