Hi everyone,
I was in a pretty bad accident on Jan 9th where a likely drunk driver totaled my car. I say likely because he fled the accident on foot after the collision, leaving my son and I at the scene. I was fortunate enough to come out with a fractured hip in 3 places and some bruised ribs, but otherwise repairable. My son walked away without a scratch. After nearly a month, I'm finally able to limp around a bit and am looking to get another vehicle, so I'm ready to settle with the insurance on my 2006 BMW M5. It had 110k miles, but at least one engine replacement. The previous owner told me around 40-50k miles, but dealer records show a likely replacement at 12,353. Either way, a receipt showing this would increase the value by at least $1000. The dealer I went to pulled a report based on the VIN and says center ID 04497 has a record at 12,353 miles of DEEP GROOVE BALL BEARING IN CRANK SEIZED. Does anyone know where Center 04497 is located? Better yet, does anyone have any better access that could come up with a physical receipt for an engine replacement by the VIN?
As it stands, the insurance values the car at only $14,300 because of 110k mileage, but told me any engine replacement would help significantly with valuation. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Joshua

Ouch!! Sorry to hear that. I'm glad you guys weren't hurt worse though.
Just out of curiosity, have you considered keeping the car and selling it as a parts car? A quick google search for just the s85 engine has them going for $7500 on ebay (https://www.ebay.com/i/263382942928?chn=ps).
Talk to your insurance company about it. They'll let you keep the car and they'll deduct the car's salvage value from the payout. If the drivetrain is still in good shape, I'd bet you could do a lot better selling the car yourself.
Good luck with the healing process. I hope you get back to 100%.
Cheers,
Jake
Yikes! The car took quite a hit. Glad you made it out alive.
Did the insurance company understand that the engine replacement was done at least 60,000 miles ago by the previous owner and not you? I understand why they'd want to pay out more if you just paid for a new engine sometime recently... I'm not sure why they'd add more value just because it's been replaced at some time in it's life?
It's also hard getting maintenance records from BMWs bought CPO, can't imagine how hard it'd be to get a receipt on work not performed by you. The maintenance records do not belong to the car, they belong to the owner.
$14k seems about right for that car given the market value. I know a few guys who have bought those cars under $10k now.
