So right now im looking to upgrade from my e90 its a little too small and i feel its getting outdated im looking at 2011-12 750i models with like 80-95k possibly a 740i if i can find one. also considering a 12-13 535i with like 65-75k but prefer the 7 because its more luxury. does anyone have any experience owning one of these 7s out of warranty what are normal repair costs for it annually? is the 5 that much more reliable?
I would recommend a 740 over a 750 if you're buying an older one, out of warranty. Unless you have deep pockets. The 740 will still require ongoing maintenance and repairs, but is generally cheaper to own than a 750.

Stay away from the V8.
Aren’t the newer V8s better than the older ones? When did the better ones appear? I have not followed the V8 numbers after M62 and N62. I don’t think you have any other options in the US other than V12 or V8 if you want a used 7 series, unless you want an antique or are willing to spend more for a newer hybrid.
If looking for a used large luxurious car that is reliable, consider Lexus and Infinity.
I personally would go down to a 5 series like the 535i and mod the motor to make more power and torque than the V8. Or buy a CPO V8 car or buy a different extended warranty for it. This will add several thousand dollars to the price but hedge your risk and if the car ends up being unreliable you can sell it when the warranty expires.
The newer v8's are worse than the older ones. And starting with the F01/02, the 740 was available with the straight six turbo engine.
