    Speed

Hello everyone, I have a 1998 BMW 528i automatic with 264,000 miles on it. I bought the car at 255,000 miles and I have to say I've been happy with the car so far. I had a couple of fixes and one of the most important oil pan gasket. I've been recently revving my car pretty hard and I am not so happy with the speed. My car has 1 2 3 D N R P. I once drove off with 1 then shifted to 2, then to 3, and so on. I got 10.18 seconds from 0-60. I then decided to put it on drive and just accelerate. I got 11.24 seconds. The thing that really got into my head is, when the RPMs where getting high, around 5 I could hear a like a metallic sound something like "ggggrr" or ticking, something that didn't sound right. Afterwards I never went hard on the car cause I am kind of scared of what might happened. What do you guys think I could do to be safe and go faster?

Take it to a BMW mechanic for an inspection.

You should also replace the VANOS seals.

To build on his recommendation, here's what needs to be done before you should depend on it for a long trip or try to push its limits: http://www.bimmerzone.com/category/T...nspection.html

The VANOS seals can wait until the next time you change the valve cover gasket, which is notorious for plasticizing and leaking. Here's the DiY for your '98 528i, which has single VANOS: http://www.beisansystems.com/procedu..._procedure.htm

It is also called "variable valve timing" it improves engine efficiency and performance. Here are some videos: https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...y=vanos+engine

How are you measuring the 0-60 times? Where are you doing it (TOTALLY flat ground?)? Did you do both tests at the same exact road/starting point? Are your times a single time or did you do it 3 times and take the average?

Just a side note... I believe the car, when new, was about an 8-second car - so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a little slower after 20 years and 1/4 million miles.

I'm not saying anything against the VANOS recommendation as it's a valid point - just that there could be other factors. When you accelerate hard, you should feel an extra "oomph" of power somewhere around 4,000 RPMS. Do you feel that?

Are you pushing the pedall ALL the way down - past the final "click" when you get close to the floor?
