Hi all,
Is there a way of checking if my 840 is OBD I or OBD II from the VIN?
Cheers
Model year 96 and newer in the us were required to be OBDII. But my 96, 10/95 build does not have the connector.

None of them do, they all retained the 20-pin round connector in the engine compartment even though they are OBDII

That's intersting, because my 9/95 build '96 850Ci has both the round connector under the hood and the typical OBD-II connector under the driver's side dash. Although it doesn't (and never did) have the coin holder in the driver's door.

OBD II cars ALL have the 16-pin flat connector, otherwise it couldn't be read by State emissions testing facilities - probably yours was removed as you suspect.

Only 20 pin on my 7/97, UK car.
I believe all 840's 96 and newer and all 850's 95 and newer have the flat OBD-II connector (at least in the US, not sure about other countries). I've read where the clips to the connector can break and the owner zip-tied it up so maybe you'd have to look up higher behind the dash.

I seem to remember this being discussed before. IIRC, US spec cars had the standard OBDII port 1996 and newer, while it did not have to be fitted to non-US cars like yours. It can be confusing because US spec OBDII were produced at the same time as OBDI cars. I don't recall any M62-powered 840's being OBD1. Certainly no M60's are OBDII.
To answer the original question, perhaps try realoem.com. Pull up your car by VIN. Look at something that only an OBDII car would have like 4 lambda sensors. If your car requires 4, it is OBDII. If 2, it is OBDI. I know realoem isn't perfect, but it might give you the right answer. Or check the 8-series registry: http://www.8coupe.com/Production/Chassis.aspx. You could also call your BMW dealer for a more reliable answer.
