    Cool Get ready for....

an E31 first! A while back I started this post below:

    https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...-for-the-Group

I was asking this question because I did this:

    https://youtu.be/8MSzIDwwUNo

I have thought about doing this for about 2 years and looked at several options before I chose this one:

    https://www.webasto.com/us/markets-p...-700-ii-entry/

I did this last summer (but I couldn't post this because of the format that the video was in). The install did not require any cutting of the existing roof and I have no leaks. However, it did require that the headliner and the headliner shell had to be redone which is why I thought I had to move the rear view mirror. However, it turned out that I did not have to move it I just needed to change the direction of the neck from an upward view to a downward view.

The install took 3 days and the cost was a lot less than I had originally anticipated.

I know some of the E31 purists may not agree or like what I did but I wanted to share this with the group if there is an interest for doing this with your vehicle.

    Nice!
Do you have any wind noise in the car? Our E38’s and my ALPINA B7, have a slight noise once the headliner panel is slid back. Also, can you give us a cost of what we would be looking at here?

    Thanks

OK, please send me more information on how to do this. I think I would like this option as well.

This is impressive -- add me to the list of people who want to hear more details about the installation and costs. Up until I saw this, my inclination was just to weld in my own sunroof delete when I do a full repaint. I know the sunroof-delete headliner is NLA, but just being rid of the factory mechanisms and associated headaches makes it seem worth giving up the hole above my head.

    Cheers, John

Would be nice to find a substitute mechanism for the oem pieces? I thought he might have just replaced the metal cover with the glass but it looks more involved than that idea.

Webasto is the manufacture of the moonroof. They supplied the entire assembly.

No wind noise but when I pull the cover back I do hear the road/outside a little more than I did previously.

    Thanks everyone for the compliments!

Here's a little more info on the moonroof install....

    * The install was a complete swap out of the OEM sunroof with the moonroof from Webasto.
    * The new moonroof was a completely new assembly with all of the parts included.
    * The new moonroof has a vent option and a auto close feature when the car is parked.
    * The new moonroof is used in new VW's and Audi's and Webasto is their OEM manufacturer.
    * There was no cutting on the existing roof but it did require some filing as the new roof needed to be opened 1/4 inch from the front and back.
    * The headliner had to be redone with a new shell and a manual slide panel.
    * The total cost of the install was $1600.00

That's not bad...providing you didn't inadvertently drop a "digit" above.

I really like this. Very nice that someone has done this. Really modernices the car. Headliner looks very nice also. Is it completely redone or is it modified from original headliner. What is it made from? Fiberglass?
