Looking for leads on cast second overbore pistons for a 1.8L M10. doing a rebuild and the machine shop is correcting some wear- I will need to get new pistons. I see their are forged ones available, but the $!!! For a daily...
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance-
Eric.
Eric,
There are some 2nd-over cast pistons available from MaxSil:
p/n: B1251705548N 1980-1983 320I 2DR (E21) MaxSil™ w/Tefcote / 2nd Over / 89.47mm (+0.50) Bore Clearence 0.0015" Wrist Pin 0.0005" over
I looked into these briefly before I decided to do a 2.0 swap. Other than that I think you could check Walloth & Nesch to see if they have any suggestions.

Well forget what I said above - it seems that Bavarian Auto Recycling (the parent company who sold MaxSil pistons) is closed. Sorry for the confusion, next time I will research more before I post

Ireland Engineering, Forged Pistons M10de: m10forged-custom
Each Set Replacement/Performance/Race
Product DescriptionReplacement/Performance/Race
Forged pistons are stronger and lighter than cast pistons - great for racing, high-compression and custom builds. These are custom-made to order, so you can specify design features including bore, compression ratio, head type, rod length, stroke, ring type, etc. Sets include 4 pistons, rings and wrist pins. (Crown and skirt coatings available - contact us for info.)Note: Select / fill-in options when ordering (write "not sure" or "custom" and we'll contact you).
These custom forged pistons take 4-6 weeks to produce - don't wait 'til the race season begins!
Custom piston orders cannot be canceled or returned once production has started.

I'd ask IE about these before buying. More than likely ROSS pistons. Yes ROSS are reputable, but far as I know usually not low expansion alloy. Very noisy cause need clearances larger than you want making for a knocking warm up until the marshmallows expand enough filing the bores. IMO made to run hot, stay hot, WOT race only oriented application not for street with lots of restart cold cycles. I could be talking out my A$$ so just ask Jeff I'm sure he could fill you in and prove me wrong.
JE, or Wiseco IMO if funds Mahle's

Randy, AutoX-
Thanks for the input! Tried placing call Maxsil. Looking at TEP website and I see the JE forged option- it is a complete set, so definitely considering.
I'm running Maxsil with shirt coating- 2nd overbore, I'm surprised bav auto recycle closed up, Maxsil is popular brand and was the go too for stock rebuilds, maybe there are some still out there and what autox said tighter clearances on pistons, quieter motor during warmup. Forged pistons with stock clearances-less expansion factor and shirt coating and possible crown coating is worth looking into.
Another avenue which is where I'm aiming at plus extras is going 2.0L rebuild,,basically 2.0L crank- rods(80 mm stroke instead of 71 mm) and pistons[piano or flat top pistons],,there was a rebuild here done recently and a higher lift cam added in, everything else the same 1.8L to 2.0L conversion,,get more ponies under the hood. Jr Cook offered this up a while back,,the 2.0L Kit for then priced 4 c notes if memory serves..
The backstory is this many peeps from the 2002 grp complained 1.8L was too underpowered, so, BMW itself did the 2.0L conversion and published it. Its solid. This was done under Chancellor and President Willy Brandt's tutelage, where West Germany went from "0" to the 4th largest Industrial Manufacturing Country in the World. Germans know how to make stuff, Jacks quote.

If you're going the route of new pistons, it would be only a few bucks more to get a 2.0 crankshaft. You don't need to replace the rods, they are all the same length. Ireland Engineering offers teflon coated pistons that match the 1.8 heads. Depending on the fuel system you are going with, the only other thing you might have to replace is the AFM/fuel distributor with the 2.0. (see my build thread: I have about 5000 miles on this engine now, running strong with a weber 32/36) https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...0-Build-Thread

Considering the 2.0 conversion... Regardless, I need to pick up pistons... Looks like TEP is gonna get some $. And where to source a reasonable 2.0L crankshaft?
I found my 2.0 crankshaft by posting a Wanted ad on the 2002FAQ website.
FYI - I was really pleased with TEP on my JE pistons and reground cam. Steve was very helpful making sure all the parts were properly spec'd for my build.

MJ- That is great to hear as that is exactly the route I am attempting. Thank you!
Quick update-
Picked up a 2.0L crank from a 2002'er that has a stock pile of M10 parts. Helpful guy on Facebook and I have picked up a few odds and ends form him.
Ordered pistons from TEP. Steve was very encouraging and offered suggestions on the throttle body and cam size after clarifying block and head.
Will start in on the oil pump and more research while waiting for the pistons and the machine shop to confirm fit.
Thanks Tlapham for the link to your build. Following in your path...
Jody- I don’t see it being done it time for the vintage- you are familiar with the hiccups???
Thanks for the support- will keep you posted.
And Steve was great help- remembered you.

Hi Bonsaibacker & others - I am planning a 2.0 build and was wondering what should I expect to pay for a 2.0L crank.
GeorgeMac- I went on the 2002 classifieds page on Facebook and had multiple people offer. Look to spend around $200+ including shipping.
Good luck.
