    R50 EWS no-start issue?

I'm having a problem with my 2002 R50 Mini. After leaving the hatch/boot open over night, I've been having problems starting (no spark or crank, etc). The problem isn't consistent. It will start right up some times and other times it will do nothing. Battery is good, charged it up and it holds voltage and passed load test. Just to be sure, I bought a brand new battery with no success. All the relays and fuses have been checked and are good as well. The problem has been getting worse over the last 2-3 months. A local mechanic is able to "fix" for 50 Euros, but it only works for about a week each time he "fixes" it. After endless troubleshooting, I've found that unplugging the EWS3 box, letting it sit for a minute, then plugging it back in will allow the car to start. Sometimes it works on the first try, some times it takes 3 to 5 tries. I'm not sure if the cable/connector is going bad, the EWS box is going bad, or if it's out of sync. My K+DCan cable arrived this week, so I'm looking for advice on what I should test/scan.

MY buddy is having similar problems on his R56 Mini so I'm subscribing for a solution.
