Rich running condition and fuel pressure regulator connection

I have endured a "rich running" condition for several years. Lots of carbon on the exhaust tips, etc. I have inspected, tested or replaced every component in the fuel injection and delivery along with ignition system. The car had a 2.5 bar Bosch 0280160227 fuel pressure regulator. I replaced it with a 3.0 bar Bosch 0280160249 fuel pressure regulator per RealOem specs.

I have an '84 euro with the "dirty" (no O2 sensor ) motor.

Question is, can the increased fuel pressure be the source of the rich running condition?

    Thanks in advance

I would think so, and I would switch back.

George, perhaps silly question but did you swap out the AFM or adjust the AFM arm in the past etc?

Rob. Everything associated with Fuel delivery/injection, ignition and such has been inspected, adjusted and/or replaced. The exception is the FPR. You see the rub?

Well, take the plug out of the side of the metal case, and look.

My M635 has one (non lambda).

    Cheers,

    Ray

Oh man. You want me to start messing with my ecu?

Good thing I have a spare one. I'll take a look.

    Thanks Ray.

First, I agree with replacing the FPR with the 2.5 bar one.

Second, I remember a post from a long time ago that a guy had a problem he just couldn't track down despite replacing lots of parts. It turned out to be a wire to the ecu that was broken. I realize that this is a long shot for you, but it might be worth a look.

Interesting thought is: I thought that Motronic basic used a 2.5 bar FPR and Motronic 1.1 and 1.3 used a 3 bar FPR.. If yours was originally a 2.5 bar, then use that.
